How do powerful characters (Jack and Ralph) maintain their position of leadership?

How do Jack and Ralph maintain thier power over the other boys on the Island, what different ways of persuading the other boys to follow them do they each have?

Ralph leads though democracy and example.

Jack leads by instilling fear through threats. In the end, it is Jack's brutality and uncivilized behavior that takes control with intimidation and direct threat.
