Loyalty is short supply on this island. Initially, Ralph is chosen leader but the boys invest little in him because he makes them work to build a working community. The boys instead gravitate to Jack who offers them "fun" and intimidates them through fear. The boys have not yet developed advanced traits of empathy and loyalty. Jack appeals to their baser instincts which the boys prefer.
