Piggy needs rules and organization. He cradles the conch, a symbol of order and democracy, while the boys fall apart around him. Most of the boys see Piggy as an outsider because of his fat, asthma and all around victim status. Piggy clings to the world of adults that fades fast. Piggy needs order and not a Darwinian survival of the fittest. Piggy needs rules, order and cooperation. Unfortunately these are in short supply.
