When Ralph tells the officer that he is boss, he becomes sad and embarrassed when he finds that he cannot answer the officer's questions. It is obvious to the officer, that the boys have not been behaving according to the rules of civilization, and he scolds them for not knowing exactly how many they are and for not being organized..... the way that Brits have been raised to be. Ralph later tries to explain that they were organized and good at first, and the officer replies he imagines it was like the "show" in The Coral Island. Ralph does not understand the reference. When the boys begin to cry.... the officer is embarrassed by their display of emotion.
