If you think back to what you have read, how does the author show us the passage of time in simple details?

The passage of time is represented through the shabby clothes or lack of clothes all together. We also see it in the boys' declining hygiene including length of hair.The demeanour and lack of language skills, especially in the "littluns" shows the passage of time as well.
