In Chapter 4, of Lord of the Flies, what is the symbolism behind the boys' hair growing?

I think there are two things here. One is that it gives us some idea of how long the boys have been stranded. The other is that they have let their former identities go. They are supposed to be disciplined British military boys yet now they have become undisciplined.
