In chapter 4 of Lord of the flies, why does roger refrain from hitting henry with the stones?

He wants to fit in with Jack's hunters, and thus joins the group in throwing stones. None-the-less, Roger still remains somewhat civilized and is careful to throw the stones where they won't make contact......... he's just trying to fit in with the wrong crowd.
