Pervival is scared. Littluns have no say in the goings on at the island. Percival is afraid of the "Beastie". When he attempts to elaborate, the boys laugh with derision. The bigger boys find weakness funny rather than sympathetic. They seek more and more to punish the weak for their own entertainment.
