In the 2nd chapter, when the older boys respond and agree to Ralph when he says that the "beastie" was a nightmare, why was their response illogical?

my teacher asked this question for homework. i doubt that it's going to be answered now (when i need it) but I'll try anyways! ALSO: (i forgot this in my question) what does their response being illogical suggest about them?

The most obvious reason that it is illogical has to do with the idea that they will agree with whomever seems to be the leader. Also, we can assume that their belief in the leader may explain their behavior with Jack later in the novel.
