In what ways does Ralph's new understanding of their condition measure the distance we have come since the glamour of the first chapter?

Things are falling apart in this chapter. hen the boys first ended up on the island they were panicked and ill equipt, but they attempted to achieve some type of order and attain a sense of civilization.

In this chapter, Ralph is frustrated, overcome, physically and emotionally exhausted, and out of ideas. Respect is dwindling, Jack is taking power, and unlike the beginning chapters, the rest of the boys are following his lead. The more uncivilized and barbaric the boys become; the more appealing Jack becomes as a leader.
