The boys' plane is shot down. We can assume it was during WW2 when the boys were being evacuated. The boys turn to savagery gradually throughout the novel. The absence of adult enforced boundaries and structure give the boys the freedom, to what Golding feels, to revert to ther true primal nature. When given free choice, Golding believes that most people, boys in this case, gravitate towards their darker inclinations. Jack offers the boys indulgence into the darker aspects of their psyche while Ralph can only offer work, responsibility, and hope.
