Over the course of the novel, Jack become evermore uncivilized. At first, he was hurt and angry that Ralph was voted leader and settles for his place as leader of the choir. He distracts himself with thoughts of the hunt. In the beginning, he is unable to do the deed (kill the pig), but later, he is not only able to kill the pig but take part in murder as well. Jack goes from a civilized, rambunctious young man to barbarian over a very short period of time.
