Ralph blows the conch for assembly. Piggy knows what the conch is and tells Ralph to call the others with it.

Sorry, It is actually Jack who blows the conch in Ch 8. I was still thinking of chapter 1. Jack thinks it is a good time to take advantage of the chaos of the beast and the fear in the boys. The act of Jack blowing the conch represents the beginning of the end of Ralph's leadership.
