Jack continually tries to make Ralph look weak by exploiting the idea of the beast. While Ralph tries to rationally dismiss the idea of the existence of a beast, Jack seizes the opportunity to claim that he will hunt and kill the beast thus protecting the other boys. The subtext of Jack's bravado is that Ralph is a weak leader and unable to protect them.
