The possibility of a beast, along with Ralph's dismissal of the subject, allows Jack to play on the fear of the younger boys. His attention to hunting down the beast in contrast to Ralph's complacency gives Jack the edge. The frightened boys aren't interested in Ralph's calm assurances.... they want action.
