Lord of the Flies

What are the structural and narrative purposes of the break and the boys' laughter in the episode of Jack's party?

This question is for Chapter 9 in Lord of the Flies.

I think this has to do with the subtext of the point of no return the boys are about to venture into. They will kill Simon, their Christ-figure, and become fully enveloped in their dark side. The hiatus in laughter is their entrance into a self-inflicted damnatation.
