What caused Maurice to cease his destruction of his littluns' castle and continue on to the water?

Maurice feels guilty about crashing the Littluns' sandcastles. He mutters an excuse even though there is nobody to discipline him. Maurice still feels the pull of the old world. This thin line between the old world of rules and his new world of freedom is quickly vanishing.
