What conversation finally brings Ralph "back to reality" about their situation? What happened in the outside world?

Piggy tells the boys that nobody knows where they are and they might be on this island for a very long time. We are never actually told what happened in the outside world but we are given hints. The atom bomb is mentioned, the boys were being urgently evacuated, and their plane was shot down. There was probably a war going on.
