what does jack mean by "i shant play anymore"?
what does it tell us about him?
what does it tell us about him?
Jack is really having a huge tantrum at this point. Jack has attempted a coup . He has asked for a re-vote for chief and lost. He runs into the jungle snivelling these words. This tells us that under his manipulation, violence and forceful domination, he is still a little child. Like any bully, Jack's power comes from attention. When his attention is threatened he reverts to who he truly is; he becomes an insecure little child. There is also the theme of “play". The idea that all of this is some kind of game resonates through this book. Their "game" is brutal and destructive.Chidlren often play games to imitate the world of adults. The destructive game on the island personifies the adult world that they come from.
