what does the conch represent? what is significant about the objeect in chapter 5?

The conch initially represents order and democracy; indeed, for Piggy, it remains this until the end. By chapter 5 the boys pay little attention to it. The boys still come to it out of habit and for entertainment purposes. It, however, becomes inceasingly impotent as Jack dominates the boys.
