I think that by chapter 12 "purpose and morality" have about as much significance as the conch. Chaos rules the island under the autocratic leadership of Jack. It is this paradox of chaos and evil control that make things hopeless for the boys. THey really don't have any purpose anymore. After the destruction of Ralph, their purpose would only change to destroying each other; the island would become a Darwinian free for all. Their morality was all but lost the minute they killed Simon, their Christ figure. After that, I would argue, there was no redemption.
