what does the sharpening of the sticks at both ends mean

when it said that jack them were waiting for ralph and they had a stick sharpened at both ends does the stick stand for something and if so what?

Initially Jack and his hunters sharpened a sick at both ends to impale the sow's head on one end and put it the other end in the ground as an offering to the beast. By the end of the novel the twins tell Ralph that Jack intends to do the same to him. Yikes!
