Lord of the Flies
what hapnes to simons body after his death? what religious symbolism is apparent in this scene?
chapter 9
chapter 9
This is an interesting scene. Certainly Simon dies a brutal death. He comes down from the mountain to give the kids the "good news". As a Christ figure must, he is brutally murdered. Really Simon is trying to save the boys from their own ignorance and fear; he is trying to save them from themselves. The language used to describe Simon’s death is brutal and violent. After Simon is dead and the boys can no longer hurt him anymore, Golding’s language changes to gentle and reverent. Golding describes “creatures with fiery eyes” surround Simon’s body and turn him into a beautiful figure of “sculptured marble”. “Everything was coated with a layer of silver”. It is a fitting end as the elements take back God's gift which the boys have so abused.
