What happens at the end of chapter 2 that creates a mood of foreboding for the rest of the story

The boys' signal fire turns into an inferno. They burn the top of the island down. To Piggy it is a literal and figurative Hell. This certainly foreshadows the burning of the whole island at the end of the story.
