What happens to Robert? Are the kids joking around? Why do they do it?

THey pretend Robert is the pig. The boys go overboard and actually hurt him in their re-enactment. The boys are clearly losing sense of civil boundaries. Jack half jokingly or perhaps seriously requests they hunt littluns.
