Lord of the Flies
what hypocritical irony is there in the boys treatment of piggy and what does it suggest about human nature

chapter 2 only
Piggy probably was the boys' best chance for getting rescued or at least surviving in a civilized way. Piggy was organized, innovative (he wanted to build a clock!) and respected the rule of order. Unfortunately the boys used Piggy as their big joke because of his looks and asthma. Piggy was an outsider and least listened to even though he had preciously important things to say.
I think it says that human nature is inherently short sighted and even self-destructive. Golding says that the boys would rather humiliate somebody than use that person to help the whole group.
