What is the appeal of Jack Merridew as a leader?

In many ways Jack is a more effective leader than Ralph. Jack is a socio-path but he is able to tap into the boys' primal desires. Killing (hunting), playing and protection from the beast are what Jack offered. Jack really gave them a sense of belonging even though this entailed worshipping him as some sort of chief-god figure.
