What role do human and civil rights play in Lord of the Flies?

One of Golding's major themes is that humanity is inherently self-destructive and damages. Despite a responsible leader (Ralph) and a Christ/savior figure (Simon) the boys still cannot manage to save themselves. There are some boys that attempt to make a civil society but most of the boys are too drawn to chaos and destructive "fun" for anything positive to happen.
