where did Simon go during Chapter three, and where do Jack and Ralph assume he's at?

Simon goes into the forest to be alone. He builds a little enclave of foliage and stays there for the night. Jack and Ralph think Simon has gone for a swim.
“Got fed up,” said Jack, “and gone for a bathe.”
