In the context of the novel, Golding explores many reasons why these boys, for the most part, conform to Jack's demands. Much of it has to do with Jack's powers of intimidation and manipulation. Fear is the bottom line here. Jack is able to manipulate their fear to keep the boys on his side. Other reasons for conformity are sense of belonging and simply the food was on Jack's side.
