Why do Ralph and Piggy go to the pig roast?

Piggy and Ralph go to the feast, hoping that somehow, they can get Jack and his tribe back into the "let's go by the rules and be rational" mode.  This does not happen; Piggy and Ralph come dangerously close to being pulled into the behavior of Jack's savage group.
