Why do Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric lie about their part in Simon's death, or use the darkness as an exuse?

Simon was well loved, and each of these characters well understands the difference between right and wrong. After the fact, none of them wants to admit they've been a part of such a horrific, barbaric event...... can you blame them for not wanting to admit their part in Simon's death?
