Why does Jack hesitate when he lifts his knife to kill the piglet?

Jack cannot handle the enormity of the act of killing. For all his boastful talk, he cannot bring himself to plunge his knife into living flesh. Jack ends up slamming his knife in a tree and vowing to kill something next time.
