THe darkness of man's heart, loss of innocence and the death of Piggy.

Ralph cries because of the officer's comment that he would have expected better (more) from British boys. The officer has no idea how hard Ralph has tried.

"Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness in man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy."
