Henry was fascinated by the way the scavengers explored and examined their surroundings. He played with them, moved them around, changed their course by making runnels with a stick. According to the text this gave Henry an inordinate amount of pleasure......

"He became absorbed beyond mere happiness as he felt himself exercising control over living things.Home He talked to them, urging them, ordering them. Driven back by the tide, his footprints became bays in which they were trapped and gave him the illusion of mastery."

As you can see in the above quote, Henry's interactions with the transparencies gave him feelings of control. This suggests that human nature dictates that a certain amount of our happiness revolves around controlling our environment and the people in it.
