Lord of the Flies
Why is the scene where Simon sees the Lord of the Flies important to chapter 8?
Lord of the Flies - Chapter 8
Lord of the Flies - Chapter 8
Simon comes face to face with the pig's head on a stick. It is the Lord of the Flies or manifestation of Beelzebub (Devil). The Lord of the Flies speaks to Simon in the voice of a Headmaster. It is an extension of the dark side that Golding thinks exists in all of us. Only Simon has the faculties to find and understand this darkness.. In the end, Simon has one of his epileptic fits and passes out. Simon has come face to face with evil and overcomes it. Simon is very much a Christ-figure in this story. He wants to tell the others the "good news" that they need not fear the beast but the other boys are simply not ready to receive it.
