I do not understand the significance or connection of the headings of the books sections and/or chapters to the storyline. Is it part of the Carmelite way of life.

The chapter headings explain the content of the chapter. Over the course of the novel, we follow Sister John's journey and embracement of her faith. Many of the subtitles allude to dates and events, others relate to Sister John's memories.... important dreams and events from her past.
