The plan is that when everyone is asleep, L. Macbeth will drug the guard's wine, so they pass out. Macbeth will sneak into Duncan's chambers and stab him to death while he is sleeping. Then when Duncan is discovered in the morning, L. Macbeth and Macbeth will pretend to be shocked.
