Did Malcolm experience any growth or changes during the story (explain)?

Malcolm is a pretty minor character. He seems to "man up" a bit as the English army moves towards Inverness. He seems in command although he really doesn't fight. We see that he has the potential to be a gentle king like his father. He seems to have matured a bit by the time he takes the crown but details are pretty vague.
