King Duncan is speaking to the captain who has just related the story of both Macbeth and Banquo's heroism in battle. The captain is bleeding and gashed from battle. Duncan is happy to hear the captain's words: he thinks they "smack of honor". He commends the captain for being a loyal and honorable servant.
