Macbeth is suffering from his own actions and unable to relax his mind.... his guilt denies him rest. We see this topic initially braoched in Act II, Scene II, when Macbeth notes that his conscience will never be the same. By killing Duncan, he has offended God, and he believed even then that his mind would never be at peace again. Conscience, he believed, would cause him to lose the soothing properties of sleep because of the guilt and sin he will carry with him.
