The witches provide a narrative hook for the Elizabethan and modern audience. The supernatural always sparks curiosity and fear. The witches also act as prophets who suggest ideas to Macbeth that only he can put into action hence making him the true creator of his own demise. The “evil” nature of the witches, note three are three of them: an "evil" Pegan number, enable Macbeth to find his own darkness. What would Macbeth be without the witches? I think you would have a much less interesting play. The supernatural components of Shakespeare's classic provide the glue for all the events to come together.
