Banquo is equally important to the play dead as he is alive. Banquo poses a threat to Macbeth's fragile psyche by showing up at the banquet scene in Act 3. He drives Macbeth further into a state of paranoia and fear. He also reminds Macbeth that Banquo's son Fleance still lives and the witches have pronounced him king. This eats at Macbeth's ambition.
