When Macbeth murders Duncan, he murders sleep. Sleep represents the healing of the mind at night. It is supposed to hold an untainted innocence where the mind may rest. Once Macbeth stabbed the King repeatedly, he destroyed the innocence of his conscience and thus any peaceful sleep he might have again.
