Macbeth

What excuse or explanation does Macbeth give for killing the guards (grooms)? What is his real reason?

He says he could not be loyal to the King and calm at the same time.

He says he was so enraged by seeing Duncan dead that he could not stop himself. However, he was afraid that even in their drunkenness they might have seen him murder Duncan, so he is just covering his tracks.
