Vladek scolds Artie for picking up a black hitchhiker. Artie can't stand the fact that a Jew who underwent such oppression can so easily oppress another minority. Vladek also hoards things and refuses to spend money unless it is pried out of him. Vladek hence fits the stereotype of the miserly old jew, it's almost cartoonish!
