Artie is characterized as a normal child who looks to his father for emotional support. Vladek, prefers to keep himself busy with his hands, a distant man, who keeps himself emotionally detached from his son and is unable to offer the support Artie needs. Their relationship, as established in the prologue, doesn't change over the course of the graphic text.
