Wolfe is alluding to the fact that safety can be bought, and is some cases he is correct. Sadly, the money Vladek's family spent to secure the transfer of Tosha, Wolfe, BiBi, Lonia, and Richieu to Zawiercie means nothing.... Tosha poisoned herself and all of the children to avoid the gas chambers, and her husband later died at Auschwitz.
