How is vladek able to make things easier for anja in her camp?

Vladek gets a job as a shoe maker. His work is really good. Vladek was able to get a note to his wife telling her this. Anja's nasty barracks head split her leather boot. Anja tells her to send it to Vladek. Vladek does such a good job that Anja is favoured.

Hey, Vladek got some paper that was used to wrap cheese. He was friendly with the barrack commander.
