In the first page of chapter one, how would you characterize Art's father, Vladek?

Chapter one of book 1 has Artie visiting Vladek at his apartment in (Queens), NY, in 1958. Vladek is clearly not close to his son Artie. Vladek is a Holocaust survivor and has remarried a woman named Mala, who is also a survivor. Vladek seems to be a very frustrated man. He is not kind to Mala and is set in his ways. He views his history with Artie with a selfish point of view unable or unwilling to recognize truths about his own behavior.
